All of the paintings in this section form part of a broader body of work that explores how meaning emerges from partial information. Through dispersed signals, fragments of colour, and branching structures, these works reflect the ways perception and cognition assemble coherence from incomplete cues. Each painting presents a field in which traces, pathways, and interruptions suggest processes of growth, transmission, and interpretation. Rather than presenting fixed images, the works invite the viewer to encounter structure gradually, allowing patterns and relationships to emerge over time.

North of Memory

A sweeping arc traverses the surface like a pathway, river, fault line, or remembered trace. It suggests movement before place, journey before destination. The surrounding landscape refers to no identifiable location, existing instead in the shifting terrain of memory.

North of Memory reflects on the landscapes we carry after we have left them. Places change, people move on, and experiences become memory. What remains is not a faithful record but a reconstruction assembled from fragments, impressions, emotion, and time. Details fade, disappear, return, and rearrange themselves. What survives is not necessarily the memory of what happened, but the memory of what mattered.

Beneath the surface lies the faint structure of a tree. Its roots extend into unseen networks of connection, inheritance, experience, and collective memory. The branches reach beyond what is known, emerging from foundations that are largely hidden from view. Like memory itself, the structures that shape us are often invisible, yet they influence everything that follows.

The title suggests both direction and distance. To travel north is to move beyond what is familiar, carrying traces of where one has been while entering uncertain territory. The work is not about leaving memory behind, but about growing beyond it. Memory remains in the roots, while attention turns toward what comes next.

The Story of North of Memory

It appeared on no map.
People knew it existed because things travelled along it.
Stories.
Memories.
Names.
Small acts of kindness.
Grief.
Hope.
None could be seen directly, yet all arrived somewhere else transformed.
No one understood the entire system.
How could they know something existed when they could only see its traces?
They glimpsed fragments: a shape here, a shadow there, a hint of something beneath the surface.
Yet from those fragments they assembled a story.
Not because they possessed the whole truth.
Because the fragments were all they had.
North of Memory is about those fragments.
The visible and the hidden.
The remembered and the forgotten.
The stories we inherit and the stories we create for ourselves.
It is about standing within memory while looking beyond it.
Not backwards.
North.

Stand Tall

Identity: The courage to be yourself

Among a community of different forms, one rises above the others, not because it is better, but because it is simply different.

Stand Tall explores the courage required to recognise, value and celebrate our own unique strengths and talents while remaining connected to a larger community. The work reflects the belief that belonging does not require sameness, and that diversity enriches rather than diminishes our collective experience.

The painting speaks to the courage to be oneself in a world that often encourages conformity. It reflects the confidence to stand by one’s values, to contribute one’s unique gifts, and to embrace difference rather than conceal it. In this way, the work acknowledges that courage can be found not only in extraordinary acts, but also in the everyday choice to live authentically and to remain true to who we are.

Through variation, contrast and presence, the painting explores themes of identity, resilience and belonging. Each form occupies its own place within the larger whole, suggesting that communities are strengthened when individuality is recognised, respected and encouraged to flourish. The work celebrates the idea that growth, resilience and positive change begin when people have the courage to stand tall and be proud of who they are.

The Strait and Narrow

What remains is not the full field, but the passage we are able to follow.

A broad field is present, but not all of it can be followed.

Across a dense, worked surface, a single passage emerges — a narrowing that both restricts and enables. It is not imposed from above, but formed through pressure, held open where other routes close down or fail to resolve. The surrounding field remains active, layered, and full of potential, but it is no longer equally available.

The title draws on the idea of The Strait and Narrow: a path that must be kept to, not because it is freely chosen, but because alternatives fall away. What appears as limitation is also a condition for continuation.

Within the work, the gold seam operates as both passage and signal. It traces a route through resistance, widening and tightening as it moves, never fully secure, yet never entirely lost. It suggests direction without guaranteeing outcome — a way through that is sustained moment by moment.

Under pressure, perception does not remain open. It narrows.

Possibilities are not removed all at once, but gradually become less viable. Attention gathers along what can still be followed, stabilising into a single path while the rest recedes into background. The field remains, but its options are no longer equally accessible.

This is not simply a landscape or a structure, but a condition of navigation — a way of moving through uncertainty where constraint is not only restrictive, but formative. The narrowing defines the passage, and the passage allows movement to continue.

What remains is not the full field, but the line that holds — a path sustained within limits, where continuation depends on staying within what can be maintained.
